Dog’s and Chocolate

With Halloween coming up just around the corner you will be getting your sweet tooth ready for all the candy and chocolate this occasion brings. While this food doesn’t pose as great of a risk to humans (aside from eating too much of it and often), it can be a bigger threat to your furry loved ones.

You have probably heard that chocolate is poisonous to dogs. This is true and you should make sure you keep all the treats away from your pet’s during Halloween and the holiday season shortly after.

The chemical that can cause your dog to become ill if chocolate is ingested in theobromine and caffeine. Dogs cannot metabolize these chemicals very well like humans can, which is why it can cause them to become sick. While it is rarely fatal if chocolate is ingested by your dog, it is always good to contact your vet if they do, especially if you are not sure how much they ate.
