Exercise For You And Your Pet

Exercise is not only something we need to keep healthy, our pet’s benefit just as much as we do. How often do you take your dog on a walk or outside for a good play session? It should be almost daily. Your dog needs at least 30 minutes a day of exercise, depending on a few factors. Their breed, age and overall health all play a role in if they need more or less.

If you have a large breed dog such as a Great Pyrenees or Great Dane their needs will be different than if you have a small/toy breed such as a Chihuahua or Shih Tzu. Again these needs will still vary from dog to dog depending on their overall health. For example my Siberian Husky is a VERY active dog and needs a long walk or run. She can run 10km or go on a 20km walk and will be satisfied, still wanting another walk later, whereas my Great Pyrenees is happy with a relaxed 3km walk.
If you have a pug, they are prone to obesity, so for a small breed you need to be more aware of their active time so this health concern can be monitored. They are also a brachycephalic breed, so make sure you watch them closely. Make sure you look into your breed and check in with your pet’s personality to see what their specific physical needs are. Like I said they are all different.
This is also very beneficial if you recently got a puppy. Do you ever wonder why they can have destructive behaviour? This can because they are not getting enough activity. They should be exercised daily where they begin to slow down at the end of a walk, run or play session..that is when you know it was a long enough activity. Keeping in mind of any health issues and of course keeping them hydrated! Just as you would with yourself.

What better way to get some exercise than with your best friend. It is something us humans and our companions can both benefit from. It decreases your risk of heart disease, keeps you fit and in good shape. Now get out there and go for a walk.
